Walking is good for our mental well being

What could better for our mental wellbeing than a walk outside with a few friends?  We have often felt that it was good for us, and quite frankly that’s enough to make it good for us, but now we have the evidence to back our feelings up!

Paths for All recently published their new research looking into the benefits of Health Walks.  The research was carried out by Greenspace Scotland and shows that group health walks deliver valuable benefits for the people of Scotland.  These short, free, gentle walks are led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders and supported by organisations such as Glasgow Life, North Glasgow Healthy Living Community, Paths for All, and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The research shows that for every £1 invested in Health Walks in Glasgow, there were £8 of benefits generated for society.  It did this by looking at the impact of the walks and assigning a monetary value to the changes it created.  Now that looks like a good return on our investment!

These findings are compelling, not only proving that investment in the programme is sound, but also giving a rich picture of the multiple social benefits experienced by walkers and volunteers. Health Walks are proven to make people fitter, healthier and happier.

Does getting out of the house and walking with friends or people you have just met contribute to your metal well being?

Do you have any stories of how walking has improved your health and wellbeing?  We would like to hear your story.
