“Things had moved on, it felt overwhelming” Amira shares her story with the Mums Returning To Work project

The Mums Returning to Work project by Outside the Box is highlighting the issues faced by a huge amount of women during pregnancy, as well as during and after maternity leave.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission found that in the U.K:

  • 77% of mums had a negative of discriminatory experience during pregnancy, maternity leave and/or on return from maternity leave
  • 54,000 mums felt that they had to leave their job for such reasons
  • 1 in 5 mums said they experienced negative comments or harassment in relation to flexible working or pregnancy

Over the past year, Outside the Box have been listening to groups of mums in Scotland who shared their experiences of returning to work after having a baby . These perspectives, such as Amira’s, have informed their new ‘mum friendly workplace’ accredited training for employers. The project has also produced the Guide For Working Mum’s, with information on maternity rights and insights from mums who’ve been there.
