Thanks to peer support, I now have a future: David’s story

Sometimes, when your mental health isn’t good, it’s hard to even imagine the future. Good mental wellbeing isn’t just about feeling better today- it’s about  owning your past and having hope for the future.

David McMillan came along to our video skills workshop recently. It was brilliant to have him there, as he had a lot of experience studying and making films. It was an honour to see him getting back to what he’s good at and trying out the new technologies that make it all so much easier these days.

But the best thing was hearing his story. David has been supported by peer workers from Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health. He told us that he’d struggled to get good support in the past, but that working with someone who had lived experience of mental ill health made all the difference. He told us:

“I’ve gone from being someone who was scared to go to the shops, to applying for a job in a shop. I now have a future.”
