Refuweegee has to be the word of the year

refuweegee

We spend a lot of time talking to people in and around Glasgow about what makes them happy, what makes them angry. It’s given us an overwhelmingly positive idea of what it means to be part of the city.

So, it didn’t come as a surprise to see the “refuweegee” project. We are all aware of the plight of refugees who have travelled from Syria and other places affected by war. There’s been a fair amount of negative talk about the situation, but the refuweegee project does exactly what we’re proud to expect of Glasgow. It’s welcoming, it’s getting things done and it unashamedly has a sense of humour. We love the fact that they’re welcoming donations of umbrellas to help people cope with the famous Glasgow rain.

If the idea inspires you, there are three ways you can get involved:

  • Letters from the locals: write a note to say hello and welcome. This can make a huge difference to make people feel accepted. If you’re a migrant yourself, maybe you could share your experiences? Drop off your letter at any Oxfam shop in the city. Find you nearest Oxfam shop.
  • Glasgow welcome: the less essential items that nonetheless make all the difference. Things like umbrellas, or Tunnocks teacakes: what’s your idea? You can drop off donations at AmiExecutive in the Italian Centre today (December 18). Find out more about the Glasgow welcome here.

    Thanks mindwaves!

Looking forward to receiving your letters and please pop in to say hi if you’re in the city anytime.

    All the best.
