What about the old me?#newyearbeyou #growth

A post by our Project Assistant Marie.

January has become so synonymous with punishment and pursuit that this beautiful statement of self acceptance from Edinburgh based writer Joanne Bell was a breath of fresh air to me . The concept of New Year, New You is actually pretty reductive – it suggests that our very essence is completely disposable, something that can be discarded and replaced.

Self acceptance doesn’t mean that we don’t want to change certain aspects of our lives. But kindness and love towards ourselves is a much healthier place from which to form new habits (if, indeed, that is something that you choose to do), than shaming the ‘old you’. How can shame ever help anyone to truly grow? We can achieve our goals because of who we are and what we have been through, rather than in spite of it.
