Mind and body relaxation: the best free or cheap massage treatments around Glasgow

Massage - Gentle Touch

My sister got me a brilliant present for my birthday: a massage. Even better, she threw in childcare so I could actually make it along.

As I emerged feeling refreshed and de-stressed (which is definitely not how I felt when I went in) I thought, “I should really do this more often.” Which is exactly the same thing that I thought last time I went for a massage… about five years ago,

Most of us know that taking time out does wonders for our mental wellbeing, especially if there’s a physical therapy involved. But it’s not easy to find the time, or the money. Even if you have cash left at the end of the month, it can feel selfish to spend it on something that seems so indulgent.

So, I’ve been looking for free or cheap places to get massage and other complementary therapies around Glasgow and Clyde. Let us know if there are others and we’ll add them to the list.

Reiki at Mental Health Network
Reiki is a good option for people who are uncomfortable being touched, as it can be hands-on or hands-off. Selena has seen the benefits of reiki for her own mental health and wants to give other people the same chance. She is very kindly offering free sessions every Wednesday afternoon at the Mental Health Network offices at Templeton, next to Glasgow Green. Call 0141 550 8417 to book your free place.

Colleges
Even massage therapists have to learn their trade. Colleges can be a great place to take advantage of free or greatly reduced treatments. Don’t worry, there are fully qualified staff there to make sure you are safe and healthy. Phone your local colleges to find out what’s on offer in your are. City of Glasgow College offers treatments at their Oakley Street and Riverside Renaissance salons and prices start from just £4.

MacMillan @ Glasgow Libraries
You’ve probably seen the MacMillan signs up at your local library, but did you know that they offer complementary therapies as well as counselling sessions? The therapies are open to anyone who is affected by cancer, whether you are a patient, a carer, a friend or if you have lost someone to cancer. Visit the volunteers at your local library or contact the project on 0141 287 2999 macmillan@glasgowlife.org.uk to find out more.

Baby massage
It’s not just adults that appreciate a massage. Babies and young children can also feel the benefits and apparently it can help them to relax and sleep better, which has a knock-on effect on the mental wellbeing of everyone in the family. There are free classes across the city, where you can learn the simple steps of baby massage. Speak to your health visitor to find out what’s available in your area.
