Throughout the summer months we’ll be spotlighting our members on the blog, celebrating the work they do with Mind Waves and beyond! This week we are hearing from the truly inspiring Thomas McCallum, one of our Anti-Stigma Podcasting Team.
Most of my adult life I have been affected by mental health issues in one way or another. However, through the course of receiving support from various charities, it became clear to me that the answer to my own support lay in helping others.
I’ve been involved with Parkinson’s UK for a few years, participation in their mental health programme trial. I’ve also volunteered with Stigma Free Lanarkshire, helping to spread awareness. This led to my involvement in the podcast project that Mind Waves is currently working on.
Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2017 was incredibly difficult. As a creative musician, it hit hard when I lost the ability to play guitar – my main instrument of choice. However, I’ve tried to find ways around these challenges.
Working on the podcast has given me a renewed sense of purpose and a feeling of usefulness, as well as a much needed creative outlet. Collaborating with such a talented group has allowed me to gain valuable experience and learn more about the mental health journeys and day-to-day struggles of others.
