Throughout the summer months we are spotlighting our members on the blog, celebrating the work they do with Mind Waves and beyond! John first got involved with Mind Waves on our Get Started with Podcasting courses in partnership with the King’s Trust. We are extremely grateful that John’s participation in Mind Waves has continued and he is a hugely valued member of our community. Here is a little more about John, in his own words.
I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in 2013. It was a relief for me, since I used to think I was just weird, but there was also a feeling of “Why did it take this long?”. I’ve since met many other neurodivergent people and, in the process, learned the word neurodiversity(!)
In 2024 under Marie’s tutorship at the Prince’s Trust (now King’s Trust), I launched my own podcast called It’s Just a State of Mind, where I interview other people with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD, etc. I carried on with it after the two week course and I have nine episodes. It is currently only on Spotify but I will try to have it on some other platforms soon, as well as hopefully doing some more episodes.
I am currently volunteering at two radio stations in Glasgow, the Hospital Broadcasting Service and Sunny Govan. I broadcast my own radio shows on Tuesday at Sunny G and Thursday at HBS, in which I have full creative control over the music I play.
It was these experiences, and Marie’s leadership, which motivated me to take part in the Mind Waves anti-stigma podcasting project. It feels like giving back to the community.
