New Year Be You: Welcome to our new Mind Waves series for January!

Our project assistant Marie introduces the new Mind Waves ‘mini-theme’ for January 2020.

New Year’s resolutions sometimes get a bad rep and, indeed, they definitely have their trappings. We sometimes set unrealistic goals and then beat ourselves up for not achieving them. When it’s cold and dark outside, sticking to goals can be that bit more difficult.

However, January can be a really apt time to commit to positive new habits. With so many people making changes, there is a lot more encouragement, support and enthusiasm around us. The feeling that we are all in the same boat, facing the same challenges can create a sense of community and connection.

Whatever your view on resolutions though, the pressure of the whole ‘New Year, New You’ messaging everywhere can be terrible for our self esteem, not to mention exhausting!

Whether you’ve made resolutions or not, whether you stick with them or not, it’s important to remind yourself that you are valuable and deserve to be happy. You can be accepting of yourself whilst being a work in progress. I once heard a great quote – “You can’t hate yourself into a version of yourself that you like”. Self-kindness, self-acceptance and self-care are more likely to help us achieve our aims than self-punishment.

So stick with Mind Waves for ‘New Year, Be You‘, our blog series of insights providing kindness, encouragement and positivity throughout January. Keep an eye on our Instagram and Twitter and, of course if there is something you’d like to share then get in touch!
