Introducing our intern: Rosie!

This week we’re introducing you to our wonderful intern and podcasting pro, Rosie. Their words are below.

I have loved radio for as long as I can remember. My mum bought me a Walkman when she went back to work so that I could listen to stories and that started my obsession with audio. Listening instead of watching meant that I could still run around and play. It was very freeing and allowed me to use my own imagination to build the worlds and characters I was listening to. I fell in love with audio books and radio plays. I can distinctly remember listening to The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Rats of NIMH. As my collection grew I started to wonder how they were made. I found out that teams of people were paid to make these wonderful creations. I would have done it for free, and I did! I made up plays and stories and recorded myself reading them. In university, as well as several acting and singing performances, I got to write, direct and record my own play for the student radio station as well as learning the technical side of sound production.

At the start of lockdown, I finally gathered my courage and started my own podcast called Yorick Radio Productions; which I had been dreaming about for years. Initially I recruited actors I knew to play roles and read stories before branching out into interviews with authors around the world. Since then I have expanded even further into informational episodes and dramatized readings. It has been a great experience and a chance to grow connections while having to be physically separate.

Once I was confident in my technical and production skills I moved Yorick Radio Productions onto a professional footing and was hired to produce podcasts for Mindwaves. I was drawn to Mindwaves because I believe in their values, love what they are doing and can empathise with the community as I live with mental illness and hoped that I could help people with experiences like mine. Radio plays and audio books have got me through some very difficult times and now I have the opportunity to use the skills they taught me to support other people.

I’m so happy and excited to be working on the Mindwaves podcast. It has been wonderful to meet and interview inspiring, creative people and to help share their experience and knowledge. In addition, for me it represents how far I have come. Every day that I get up and work with audio and reach out to others is another day that I didn’t let mental health challenges hold me down. I’m looking forward to bringing you more episodes and I hope that you enjoy them!

If you would like to share your own experiences, ideas or a creative response to mental health on the Mindwaves podcast then you can contact me at: podcasts@mindwavesnews.com
