“I’m not just a disabled person. I’m an LGBT person and lots of other things” – Glasgow Disability Alliance launches podcast

We are delighted to shared information about the new podcast from our friends at Glasgow Disability Alliance

Glasgow Disability Alliance is a disabled people’s organisation with over 5000 members.  We ran a Mind Waves podcasting workshop with them in summer 2019 and they’ve now launched their own podcast. The first episode comes from their LQBTQI+ members group.

In 2015 a small group of GDA members who identify as LGBTQ+ ran a workshop at a Free Pride event – for people to share their experiences as disabled people in the LGBTQ+ community. The room was packed and it became clear that LGBT disabled people wanted and needed their own community space, to build confidence through peer support and a shared identity, and speak out to raise awareness of the multiple barriers they face.

This marked the inception of GDA’s LGBTQI+ disabled members group, who have now been meeting regularly since 2016. Through the dedication of participants and collaboration with a range of partner organisations, the group provide opportunities for members to:

  • Build confidence and connections through fun learning and activities
  • Influence policies and services like Social Security, Health and Social Care, Participatory Budgeting
  • Advise LGBT organisers how to make events, services and premises more accessible.

Having gone from strength to strength over the past four years, the group have now taken the very ambitious step of making the first episode of GDA’s new podcast! We absolutely love it- it covers a wealth of social and political issues, yet still manages to be light and entertaining with a friendly, down to earth feel.

A lot of this is down to personalities of the presenters and contributors. Their interactions come across in in a really authentic way and they are generous in sharing their own experiences. Charlotte, Kim, Susan, Gemma, Neil, Emily and Ross chat about topics such as identity, access to LGBT events, activism, socialising, policy and decision-making and stereotypes. As well as the audio recording, GDA have also made a transcript of these insightful conversations available online.

We think this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in diverse, passionate, insightful and engaging perspectives on being an LGTQI+ disabled person in Scotland right now. We can’t wait to see what they cover next.  Visit the podcast webpage to find out how to listen and to download the episode transcript.
