5 ways to survive Valentines Day

Do you know what? I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who likes Valentine’s Day.

If you’re single, you feel lonely.  If you’re in a relationship, you feel inadequate. If you’ve just broken up… don’t even think about it.

Of course, your mental wellbeing can take a knock at any time of the year, but there’s something about a day that’s dedicated to an idea of “perfect romance” that brings our own inadequacies into focus. At least this year it falls on a Sunday, so at least (for those of us who work Monday to Friday) we won’t have to tolerate colleagues having bouquets of red roses delivered to the office.

Here’s some top tips collected from around the internet to help you survive.

1. Don’t go out
The food’s expensive, even the parks are full of kissing couples and the air is infused with a sense of high expectations. Doesn’t sound like much fun, whether you’re single or in a relationship. Use the excuse to have a night in the house in front of a bad movie.

2. Have a laugh
As long as you don’t take it too seriously, Valentine’s day in a relationship can be okay. Instead of spending hours searching for a tasteful card, go for the gaudiest, most sparkly thing you can find. In fact, why not have a tacky card contest?

3. Avoid social media
If you don’t want to hear about how great everybody else’s day is, avoid facebook and and instagram. Even if you know that nobody can really be that #HAPPY #LOVEDUP and #BLESSED, it can still make you feel rubbish.

4. Find a platonic buddy
You know what, if you don’t like Valentine’s Day, you’re definitely not alone. Buddy up with someone else who can’t face it and laugh at it together.

5. Sit it out, it will be over soon
Time marches on: it’s only one day. Come Monday there will be reduced heart-shaped chocolates in the shops and there’s plenty of other things to look forward to. The new X Files is on normal telly now- what more do we want?
